Senior Photo Shoot Tips

Senior Picture Clothing Ideas
Having professional photos taken of high school seniors is a tradition that dates back to the 1930’s. We’ve all seen the photographs of stiffly posed boys in tuxedo jackets and girls draped in black-velvet wraps and classic pearls. These days, however, high school senior photography has evolved into a world of its own. It’s about individual style.

Choosing the Right Clothing

Clothes may be one of the biggest concerns for seniors having their senior portraits taken. They want to look good and feel good in the clothes they wear.

When selecting your clothing for your senior portrait session, keep in mind what ideas you may have for poses. I can also assist you with helpful tips and suggestions for clothing and posing ideas as well. If you desire photographs where you will be lying down or sitting, you may not want skin to show from a short shirt or low-waist pair of pants or shorts. Consider how the clothing lies on your body. Tops that gap or pull may not be the most flattering. Clothing should be wrinkle-free and not too baggy or tight. Something may look nice while standing, may take on an entirely different look when sitting or lying down. Select clothing that will lend itself to any position or pose.

Color Selection

Darker, solid colors tend to be the most slimming. Remember, the eye is attracted to bright colors first. Depending on your body style and weight proportions, a brightly colored top complemented with a darker bottom may camouflage full hips. Likewise, a bright red top on a well-endowed young woman will draw the viewer’s eye to her top section.

Select colors like black, white, gray, yellow, violet, green, teal, mauve or maroon all photograph very well. Very dark blue or pink, as well as light blue and soft pink also look great. However, soft pink or blue may tend to make the subject look younger. Colors that complement your skin tone and color is also a big consideration when making the final selection.

Patterns & Glitter

Large, bold patterns give the illusion of being larger. Horizontal stripes are not recommended for anyone concerned about weight. Medium sized patterns can be camouflaging, depending on the style and type of pattern. Vertical stripes have a lengthening effect. However, clingy vertical stripe materials may become distorted, hence loosing the slimming effect.

Shiny, glittery or sparkly materials will make the subject appear larger. Again, if weight may be a concern, opt for matte fabrics and add accessories and jewelry for some pizazz.

Slimming Outfits

For those concerned about weight, sleeveless tops will make you look about 10 lbs heavier. ¾ sleeve lengths have the most slimming effect. Additionally, over sized clothing will not camouflage, they will only make you appear larger. Equally, on the other side, clothing that is too tight will give the appearance of being larger as well. Being comfortable in your clothing during your photo session is of the utmost importance. If you feel good in your clothing you will be more comfortable which ultimately ends up happy, comfortable looking photos.

Flaunt Your Style and Accessorize

Make sure you stay true to yourself since your parents will most likely keep these images for ever.  Also, accessorize, accessorize, accessorize, from subtle to creative. If it’s your style, change it up as frequently as possible. Don’t forget your waist and feet. Wearing the same shoes through the entire session only works when you do not change outfits. I suggest changing your shoes with each outfit. Ladies, high heels photograph incredibly well and add sizzle to any image. Guys, don’t forget a tie and belt if you for your dressed look.

On the Day of Your Senior Photo Shoot

You should select your clothing based upon the different styles and looks you desire...it's all about YOU.  I recommend starting your session with what you would consider your dressiest styles. Plan your outfits from dressy to casual, keeping in mind to accessorize differently with each change. A simple earring change for gals with a layered top gives the appearance of a whole new outfit. Equally, for guys, a vest or a shirt over a tee will also give a change of clothing look just by taking off the over shirt
